New schools, demolitions: What to know about Corpus Christi ISD construction projects

From new middle schools to additional gymnasiums and playgrounds, Corpus Christi ISD is working to finish several school construction projects.

Corpus Christi Independent School District’s most recent bond proposal was rejected by voters in 2024, but there are still several projects from previous bond elections that are on track for completion.

Trent Wagner, the district’s executive director of construction project management, recently updated the CCISD board of trustees on the status of ongoing projects.

Here’s when the community can expect the remaining school construction projects to finish:

Lexington Middle School

Corpus Christi ISD’s newest middle school has a name and a mascot, and the school is nearing completion.

Lexington Middle School is approximately 77% complete with a move-in date of July 2025, Wagner said during the March 24 school board meeting.

The district is in discussions with the city to brainstorm ideas for watering for the school’s athletic field amidst the current water shortage, Wagner said.

Students at Creekside Elementary School chose the new middle school’s mascot, which will be the Gators. The school’s colors are green and orange.

Carroll High School demolition

Voters approved plans for a new Carroll High School back in 2018. The new school located on the corner of Kostoryz Road and Saratoga Boulevard was completed in 2022.

In the years since then, parts of the old campus were rented out as office space to outside groups. The campus has also served as an election polling location.

But the school board finally voted to demolish the old school buildings in late 2024 due to repeated reports of vandalism and vagrancy. The demolition is expected to cost $2.3 million.

As of March, the project was 5% to 10% complete, beginning with abatement. The project will be completed in September.

The school’s tiger mural has been removed ahead of the demolition.

Hamlin Middle School

The district is currently building a new Hamlin Middle School.

The project is more than 78% complete. Staff members are expected to move in to the new school in July.

Demolition of the old school building is scheduled for early June.

The $72 million project includes a roughly 155,000-square-foot facility with a capacity of 750 students, which is a slightly smaller capacity than the current school.

The new school faces South Staples Street with 22 classrooms, two collaboration spaces and a fine arts wing dedicated to choir, drama, orchestra and band. Also included is an about 3,500-square-foot library, a more than 5,000-square-foot multipurpose cafetorium and a nearly 9,700-square-foot competition gym.

Middle school gymnasiums

The district is adding second gymnasiums to Adkins Middle School and Driscoll Middle School.

The Adkins Middle School gym project was 70% complete in March with move-in scheduled for June.

Progress on the Driscoll Middle School gym project is similar, at 70% complete and a June move-in.

Playground, marquee improvements

The district has recently added playgrounds to Kostoryz Elementary School, Mireles Elementary School, Webb Elementary School, Oak Park Elementary School, Galvan Elementary School, Dawson Elementary School and the Early Childhood Development Center.

This leaves five schools awaiting new playgrounds: Zavala Elementary School, Garcia Elementary School, Travis Elementary School, Sanders Elementary School and Berlanga Elementary School.

The district has also finalized the design and ordered materials for marquees across CCISD. Fifteen schools are getting new signs, with 10 campuses receiving retrofitted marquees.

As of March 24, the district was awaiting permit approval for one sign, with 24 approved.
