With only weeks to go before the May 26 Republican U.S. Senate runoff election, Attorney General Ken Paxton continues to lead.
A new survey from the University of Houston’s Hobby School of Public Affairs released Tuesday, May 5, showed Paxton leading U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, by 3 percentage points, 48% to 45%. The poll surveyed 1,200 likely Texas runoff voters between April 28 and May 1.
The narrow margin shows the race is a toss up at this point.
The latest poll comes after a series of polls showing Cornyn trailing Paxton in the waning days of the runoff campaign. The winner of the runoff will head to a November showdown with state Rep. James Talarico, D-Austin.
The poll showed Paxton leading in nearly every category, including favorability versus unfavorability where Paxton came in at 50% and 43% compared to Cornyn at 47% and 49%.
Interestingly, the two were evenly split when it came to who has the better chance of defeating Talarico in the General Election, with 43% going to each candidate and 14% of respondents saying neither candidate represented a strong contender in November.
Following are some of the other key findings in the poll:
