One of El Paso’s top high school athletes is staying home to run cross country and compete in track and field for UTEP.
Montwood High School senior Mia Hairston announced Tuesday, May 10, on X that she will stay home and compete for the Miners.
Hairston is a four-time regional qualifier in cross country, an area and regional qualifier in track and field, and was the starting point guard for the Rams basketball team, helping them become district and bidistrict champions this past season.
She had multiple offers to compete in college in both sports.
“I want to be able to major in nursing and that was important to me. UTEP will work with me with my schedule in that area,” Hairston said. “I’m really excited about staying home to compete. UTEP followed me early in my senior year and I’m excited to compete for the Miners. The 800 and 1,500 meters are events that I look to run in track in the spring and cross country in the fall.”
On March 6-7 at the West Texas Relays in Odessa, Hairston won the 800 meters in 2:21.81 and finished second in the 1,600 meters in 5:31.59.
