Malachi Snow broke a 15-year-old school record in the 110-meter hurdles, highlighting Texas Tech track and field performances in the four-day NCAA West regional meet that concluded Saturday, May 30, in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Snow tore down the track in a wind-legal 13.18 seconds on Friday, May 29, breaking the old record of 13.23 set by Omo Osaghae, a Monterey graduate and 2024 inductee into the Texas Tech athletics Hall of Fame. Snow’s run came in the quarterfinal round and his third place overall earned him a trip to the NCAA outdoor championships from June 10-13 in Eugene, Oregon.
In both the West regional hosted by Arkansas and the East regional hosted by Kentucky, fields of 48 competitors in each event were trimmed to 12 who advance to the national meet at Hayward Field.
Tech’s Temitope Adeshina in the women’s high jump and Jonathan Seremes in the men’s triple jump will go to Eugene looking to sweep titles after each won their event at the NCAA indoor championships in March for the second year in a row.
The high jump ended when the field was narrowed to 12, Adeshina having cleared 6 feet, 1 1/2 inches, tied for the top height. Seremes went a wind-legal 54-1 3/4, seventh in the triple jump.
The Tech men had two second-place finishers. Moroccan junior Zaid Latif went 26-5 1/2 in the long jump on Wednesday, breaking the personal record he set two weeks ago when he finished second at the Big 12 championships. Kenyan sophomore Titus Kimaru was runner-up in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday, running 8 minutes, 28.58 seconds, a John McDonnell Field record.
The Tech hurdlers made a strong showing. In addition to Snow’s performance, Symoria Adkins ran personal record 12.80 in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, the fastest time in Thursday’s first round. Then she ran 12.82 for fourth overall in Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Sixth-place finisher Tonie-Ann Forbes joined Adkins in qualifying for Eugene in the 100-meter hurdles, and Vanessa Balde and Lovina Ewusi took fourth and seventh overall in the 400-meter hurdles.
The Tech women also will be sending two each to Eugene in the triple jump, where Tamiah Washington and Grace Oshiokpu were fifth and 11th, respectively, and in the high jump with Adeshina and Evelyn Lavielle. Washington’s triple-jump mark of 45-0 1/2 was a personal record for the senior from New York. Lavielle was fourth in the high jump, clearing 6-1 1/2.
The Tech men and women both qualified their 400-meter and 1,600-meter relays. The men’s sprint relay of Braylin Byrd, Johnathan Crawford, Josiyah Taylor and Kimarlie Stewart got the baton around in 38.96. The 1,600 relay lineup of Crawford, Shaemar Uter, Brian Tinega and George Garcia ran a 3:02.44.
The women’s sprint relay of Alyssa Colbert, Olayinka Olajide, Anita Afrifa and Adriane Nwonumah clocked a 43.53. The 1,600 relay with Collinique Farrington, Mekenze Kelley, Balde and Ewusi ran 3:28.55, the second best time in the program’s history.
