A “very large water main” break depleted about 15 area water reservoirs on Sunday and left thousands of residents with little to no water service in parts of Northeast El Paso, a water utility spokesperson said.
The major pipeline break, involving a large amount of water during freezing temperatures, occurred early Sunday, Jan. 11, near the intersection of Transmountain Road and Girl Scout Way near Skyline Optimist Youth Park, El Paso Water spokesperson Denise Parra said in an email.
El Paso Water previously reported a 36-inch water main break on Antonio Avenue, which is in the neighborhood of Skyline Optimist Youth Park.
The large pipeline is connected to several smaller distribution lines and it could take several hours — potentially up to 24 hours — to restore water service to all customers, El Paso Water stated. Full repairs to the water main could take days to complete.
Some Northeast and Central residents who currently have water service on Sunday may see outages later in the day as crews refill reservoirs and stabilize the system. Residents in the area “who have water are encouraged to prepare by filling containers or bathtubs with water, if possible,” the utility advised.
“We appreciate our customers’ patience and understanding as our teams work as quickly and as safely as possible to restore service,” El Paso Water said in a statement.
