Legendary Texas A&M head coach retiring after historic career

After 54 years of coaching, including 22 seasons and 10 national championships in Aggieland, a legendary Texas A&M head coach has announced his retirement.

Track and field coach Pat Henry is calling it a career, following one of the most historic tenures of any leader who has donned the Maroon and White. Henry compiled 37 total national titles during his 38-year coaching career. He has been at the helm of Texas A&M’s track and field program since 2004, capturing 10 of his championships while in Bryan-College Station.

With the seven-time NCAA Coach of the Year’s retirement announcement on Wednesday morning, the Aggies are handed the task of replacing one of the greatest collegiate coaches of all time.

For now, it is about celebrating Henry’s incredible career accomplishments and the success he brought to Texas A&M. He is already a member of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, among other honors and awards. He is a lock to be in the Texas A&M Hall of Fame after becoming the first coach in any NCAA sport to win 10 or more national titles at two different universities.

Since being named the head coach of the Aggies 22 years ago, Henry has sent a player to every Olympiad, 30 of which have combined to capture eight medals. Not only did he lead his squads to the most successful ventures in Texas A&M’s history, but he also advocated for massive projects to upgrade the track and field facilities in College Station.

He is considered one of the pioneers of the sport and a legend that will never be forgotten at Texas A&M. Henry left his imprint on the program in various ways, off and on the track. While his successor remains uncertain at this time, there’s no doubting that Henry has cemented himself as one of the greatest coaches to ever step foot on campus.
