A Garden City, Kansas man died and two others were seriously injured Saturday evening when their SUV struck a deer and rolled off US 83 north of Canadian, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
The crash occurred around 6:15 p.m. Nov. 15. DPS said a 2014 Jeep Wrangler heading north hit a deer standing in the roadway, causing the driver to swerve hard to the left. The vehicle skidded across the highway, went over a guardrail and rolled through several small trees west of the roadway.
The driver, 60-year-old Fernando Escalante, was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected. He died at the scene.
Two passengers — 65-year-old Marina Escalante and 59-year-old Aburto Quintil Dominguez, both of Garden City — were wearing seat belts and suffered serious injuries. They were taken to Hemphill County Hospital.
DPS said the weather was clear and the road was dry at the time. The crash remains under investigation by the Texas Highway Patrol.
