The Texas Tech Red Raiders and Texas Longhorns have been trading barbs back and forth ever since Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian’s recent criticisms of Texas Tech’s Big 12 schedule.
Texas Tech’s Joey McGuire had a simple solution: They should play Week 1 to see if the criticism was accurate. Unfortunately, that is not going to happen, and it now looks like they won’t play next year either. According to OnTexasFootball writer CJ Vogel, McGuire was speaking at the San Antonio QB Club and teased that they will be announcing a home-and-home series against a “major blue blood” for the 2027 and 2028 seasons, but it will not be against the Longhorns.
“It won’t be Texas because they’re scared,” McGuire explained.
Texas Tech and Texas played every year from 1960 to 2023, with Texas leading the all-time series 55-18, but they have not played since Texas left for the SEC in 2024. Both programs have had success recently, with each program making the playoffs last season.
Unfortunately, for them to have any hope of playing again soon, it seems like it will take the two in-state rivals meeting in the playoffs.
