After a long, difficult relationship with the New York Jets, Texas A&M’s former defensive lineman has found his new home with the Indianapolis Colts through free agency.
NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported Wednesday afternoon that Micheal Clemons has signed a three-year, $17.5 million contract ($18.5 million upside) with the Colts. Indianapolis is fortifying a position of need after freeing up cap space with quarterback Daniel Jones’ extension.
Clemons racked up 93 total tackles, 21 tackles for loss, and 12.5 sacks with the Aggies from 2017 to 2022. Texas A&M’s defensive standout was selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the New York Jets, following his collegiate career in Bryan-College Station. Through four seasons with the Jets, Clemons recorded 119 total tackles, 8.5 sacks, 13 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, and two pass deflections.
According to NFL insider Ian Rappoport, the Colts were in position to land highly-touted Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman Trey Hendrickson before the Maxx Crosby saga shook the landscape of the league over recent days. The Baltimore Ravens offered Hendrickson more, which in turn left the Colts with a massive hole to fill up front. Indianapolis turned to Clemons, an established defensive piece who could provide a boost where the franchise needed the most improvement entering 2026.
Indy signing Clemons sparked mixed reactions across social media, especially after the complicated history between the Jets and the former Aggie star. Clemons has been heavily penalized throughout his professional career and has also been involved in multiple off-the-gridiron altercations that have caused the franchise many issues over the last four years.
New York’s scheme change also didn’t quite fit Clemons’ style, making his move to free agency, and eventual signing with the Colts this week, a perfect fit for all parties involved.
