Indiana HC Curt Cignetti weighs in on Brendan Sorsby's future

The Brendan Sorsby saga at Texas Tech has brought a lot of opinions to the surface around the college football world, with many stating their thoughts on the Red Raiders’ quarterback being ruled eligible to play the 2026 season after openly admitting to wagering thousands of times over the past few years, including on his own team.

A lot of these opinions, however, came from people who know little about the situation or the person. While still valid, it’s interesting to get a take on the situation from someone who knows Sorsby and has spent some time around him.

For that perspective, we can turn to defending-championship head coach Curt Cignetti with the Indiana Hoosiers. Cignetti hasn’t spent much time around Sorsby, but he did coach him for a short period at Indiana when Cignetti took over in Bloomington. On Thursday, Cignetti went on the Rich Eisen Show and discussed the matter.

“I know Brendan a little bit,” Cignetti said. “He was actually in the program for about a week and a half when I was hired. I think he’s an outstanding quarterback and a great kid. I think he’s going to be a great pro with the proper support system to overcome some of the issues he’s had.”

With the bulk of the drama largely behind us, and Sorsby applying for a spot in the NFL supplemental draft, that second part is what’s most important moving forward. Sorsby won’t play college football this year, but he will likely enter an NFL locker room where thoughts on gambling are still taboo. Seeing how he fits in and continues his recovery is going to be huge in determining how his career plays out.

We will see how things play out and where Sorsby lands in the supplemental draft, but watching how he handles the next step will determine a lot. According to his former coach, there should be some confidence that he can handle what’s to come.
