Hughes' big week earns him Big 12 Co-Player of the week honors

Heading into their last home stand of the season, Texas Tech needed its best player to show out if it wanted to extend its season. We at Red Raider Wire said as much about Logan Hughes:

Hughes will be the tone-setter for this offense as the Red Raiders aim to out-slug BYU to keep hold of that last Big 12 tournament ticket.

Well, he received the message. He met the moment by .417 with three home runs, 10 RBIs, and seven runs scored. The Red Raiders went 3-1 last week on the heels of Hughes’ performance. As a result, on Monday, the conference announced he was named the Big 12’s Co-Player of the Week. Hughes has picked the opportune time to catch fire. He has now homered in four of his last five games. It’s not a coincidence that the Red Raider baseball team is 4-1 in its last five games. Hughes homered in all four of those wins. Both played critical roles in the Red Raiders’ 2-1 win over BYU on Thursday night and in the series-clinching 15-11 win on Saturday.

With the two more Big 12 home runs this past weekend, Hughes recorded his 18th and 19th Big 12 career home runs. That moved him into a tie for second all-time with Jace Jung and Keith Ginter. Hughes’ three home runs also bring him within one long ball of tying Eric Guittierez for ninth all-time on the Red Raiders home run list at 36. The first round pick in July’s MLB Draft is now hitting .368 with 16 home runs and 68 RBIs. Hughes has 70 hits on the season, 45% of those have gone for extra bases. As the regular season is about to come to a close, Hughes is slashing .368/.496/.711.

Hughes and the Texas Tech baseball team close the regular season this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at Cincinnati. Game times at UC Baseball stadium are set for 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and Noon on Saturday. All times are Central Standard Time.
