The Abilene Christian Wildcats are ready for a major test and a shot at revenge in their home opener during Week 2 of the 2025 college football season..
Abilene Christian (0-1) will host the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (0-1) in its first home game of the year at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at Anthony Field at Wildcat Stadium in Abilene.
ACU will be looking to avenge its loss against the Lumberjacks in a rematch of a game SFA won 32-19 in Nacogdoches.
The Wildcats – ranked No. 16 in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 rankings – are coming off a 35-7 road loss against Tulsa in their season opener against an FCS opponent. SFA – the No. 24-ranked team in the FCS Top 25 – fell to Houston 27-0 in its season opener last week.
Saturday’s matchup will be the 27th meeting between Abilene Christian and Stephen F. Austin on the football field, with SFA leading the all-time series 14-12. The Wildcats and Lumberjacks have played every year since 2014 when ACU transitioned to the FCS level.
The Wildcats are 4-8 against SFA since moving up to Division I. ACU will be looking for its first victory against the Lumberjacks since a 31-24 double overtime win in 2020 at Globe Life Field in Arlington.
ACU head coach Keith Patterson boasts a 21-16 overall record since taking the reins at Abilene Christian in December 2021, but he will be looking to notch his first win against Stephen F. Austin since moving to ACU.
Patterson and ACU will also be looking to build upon the momentum built up during a season of unprecedented success in 2024.
The Wildcats won the United Athletic Conference championship and secured their first FCS Playoffs berth in program history.
Abilene Christian hosted and won its first FCS Playoff game in school history against Northern Arizona before falling on the road to defending FCS national champion North Dakota State in the second round of the FCS Playoffs.
