Investigators believe Appleton was driving a 2020 Toyota Tundra east on U.S. 82, approaching the intersection with U.S. 62, while a truck tractor driven by 24-year-old Sergio Aviles of Guerrero, Mexico, was traveling southwest on U.S. 62. The truck tractor disregarded a stop sign and collided with the driver-side door of the Toyota Tundra. Both vehicles caught on fire.

Appleton was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, 78-year-old Terry Appleton of Hobbs, was taken to University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Aviles was not injured. All occupants were wearing seatbelts.

Other factors contributing to the crash were not immediately available as the investigation is ongoing.

Peggy Appleton was vice-president of the Hobbs Municipal Schools Board of Education, according to the Hobbs News Sun.
