Game Day Central: Texas Football vs. Florida Gators

Let the SEC madness begin! The Texas Longhorns travel to Gainesville, FL today to take on the Florida Gators in the Swamp to open conference play. The Swamp could live up to its name today, as there is a chance of rain during the game.

Texas quarterback Arch Manning will be the big focus of the game for Longhorns fans. It seemed like the struggling QB turned a corner two weeks ago against Sam Houston State. But the Gators will offer a more formidable opponent than the Bearkats.

On the Florida side of the ball, QB DJ Lagway has been disappointing so far this year. He could be nursing an injury. Either way, the Gators are 1-3 with a couple bad losses.

On the injury front, starting running back CJ Baxter has been downgraded from doubtful to out. Tre Wisner is listed as probable.

The Longhorns also need to make sure they focus on Florida today and not be looking ahead to the Red River Shootout next week. Texas Coach Steve Sarkisian will undoubtedly want to make sure the trip to the Sunshine State doesn’t become a trap game.

Texas vs. Florida Prediction

I’m still not sold that the Texas offense is ready for the SEC. It was a good sign that Arch Manning and company finally were able to pick apart one of the cupcake teams on the schedule. But let’s face it, that should have happened in all of the last three games. UT should look better on offense Saturday.

While the offense could bring the threat of upset into the picture, the Texas defense should shut it down. The Longhorns might have the best defense in the country and a possibly dinged up Lagway might be running for his life.

Final Score: Texas 24, Florida 13
