Funeral plans announced for Bishop Emeritus René Henry Gracida

Funeral arrangements for Bishop Emeritus René Henry Gracida have been finalized.

Gracida, who served as the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Corpus Christi from 1983 to 1997, died at the age of 102 on May 1.

Ahead of the funeral Mass, there will be several visitation opportunities.

On May 11, visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church. There will be a Most Holy Rosary at 7 p.m.

On May 12, visitation will be held from 2:30 to 9 p.m. at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church. There will be a Solemn Vespers for the Deceased at 7:30 p.m.

The funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. May 13 at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church, located at 3502 Saratoga Blvd. in Corpus Christi. Viewing will take place from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Entombment is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. May 13 at the Corpus Christi Cathedral. Space is limited due to ongoing renovations at the cathedral. Because of this, the public is encouraged to watch the entombment via livestream.

The livestream link was not available as of May 6 but will be shared on the diocese’s website at diocesecc.org.

During his time as bishop in Corpus Christi, Gracida was active in local issues, serving as a prominent guiding voice for local Catholics.

Before choosing a religious vocation, Gracida was an architect and a World War II veteran.
