Major League Baseball’s brightest stars square off in the Midsummer Classic in Philadelphia this evening. But the future of the league happened on Saturday and Sunday as the 20 rounds in the MLB draft were held. The Texas Tech baseball team had four members from its 2026 team selected. One of them joined an exclusive company in the Texas Tech record books. Even in a very disappointing year for the Red Raiders, they were not lacking in top-tier talent that MLB was keeping a close eye on all season. All draftees from the 2026 MLB Draft have until Monday, July 27th, at 4 p.m to sign with their respective clubs.
Let’s take a look at where the four Red Raiders went.
OF/1B Logan Hughes
It was hardly a shock that Logan Hughes heard his name selected in the first round of the 2026 MLB draft. Hughes became just the fourth first-round pick in program history when the Houston Astros took him with the 17th overall pick. He was the first Big 12 player selected in the 2026 MLB draft. Hughes had an incredible career as a Red Raider. In 107 career games, he boasted a .350 batting average, 37 home runs, and 129 RBIs. Hughes’ power at the plate is what stood out the most in making him an early draft selection.
OF Caden Ferraro
The next Texas Tech baseball player drafted came in the third round by the St. Louis Cardinals. Hughes’ fellow outfielder, Caden Ferraro, was selected with the 86th overall pick. Ferraro didn’t begin his baseball career with the Red Raiders. He spent 2 seasons at Blinn College, where he won the 2024 JUCO World Series. His 2026 season earned him a selection to the All-Big 12 second team. He batted .374 with eight home runs and 46 RBIs. Much like Hughes, Ferraro’s bat is what caught the attention of MLB scouts.
OF Kyeler Thompson
The Red Raiders draftees were split, with two drafted on Saturday and the remaining two on Sunday. It was Kyeler Thompson who heard his name called next for Tim Tadlock’s team. His selection came in the ninth round (No. 283 overall) by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Thompson, who also transferred into the program after a season at Galveston College, was one of the best leadoff hitters in all of college baseball. He was 26-for-32 on stolen bases last season and also had a .358 batting average. Thompson added three home runs, 15 doubles, and two triples in 2026. Over his two-year career at Texas Tech, he stole a combined 55 bases and scored 92 runs.
C Matt Quintanar
The final Texas Tech baseball player drafted was selected in the 15th round (No. 489 overall) by the Philadelphia Phillies. The only non-outfielder to be drafted in 2026 for the Red Raiders, Matt Quintanar, became the 75th all-time player to be drafted in the Tadlock era. Quintanar started 53 games for Texas Tech in 2026 and only struck out 17 times while earning 20 walks. Behind the plate, he caught 22 of 49 runners attempting to steal (44.9%). The MLB average is 29%.
