Former Longhorns catcher Cole Chamberlain has found a new home. On Wednesday, the California native announced that he is joining Coastal Carolina. After one year at Texas, he will look to earn more playing time with the Chanticleers and make his mark in Conway, South Carolina.
In his only season at Texas, Chamberlain struggled at the plate. He appeared in 22 games and posted a .135 batting average. He only recorded two extra-base hits and struck out 15 times. With Rylan Galvin, who is expected to be an MLB draft pick later this month, getting most of the starts, Chamberlain was unable to carve out a consistent role.
While Galvin is moving on, Chamberlain did not have an easy path to playing time next year. This offseason, the Longhorns have added one of the best catchers in the nation, Carson Tinney. They also secured a commitment from Andrew Ermis, who hit .235 in 50 games for Temple during the 2025 campaign. That is partly why Chamberlain entered the portal.
Although Chamberlain’s time with the Longhorns was full of frustration, he should draw some interest from teams that need catching help. Coming out of high school, he was ranked as the 22nd-best catcher in the 2024 class by Perfect Game. The San Marin High School product was also ranked as the sixth-best catcher from California. After a down year, he will be motivated to justify that those rankings were not incorrect.
In what has been a busy offseason, the Longhorns have lost over ten players to the portal. That includes RHP Drew Rerick, who announced that he was transferring on Tuesday. Despite the losses, Texas is poised for another special season after adding some of the nation’s top bats.
Over the next few weeks, it will be interesting to see how Chamberlain’s market develops and where he ultimately lands.
