As winter sports finish their seasons and spring sports begin district play, the Standard-Times will continue accepting nominations for City National Bank Athlete of the Week throughout the high school sports year.
There is plenty of action and outstanding performances left in the high school sports season. Soccer is now in the postseason, local softball and baseball teams began their district schedules, and the track and field season is advancing toward district meets.
The Standard-Times will release a list of finalists for the High School Athlete of the Week each Tuesday.
Several standouts were nominated for the most recent City National Bank Athlete of the Week award.
After nearly a week of voting, Central softball’s Veronica Castro was voted City National Bank Athlete of the Week. She garnered 8,239 votes, 42.65% of the votes cast.
She was nominated after she had three hits in four at-bats, a double and a home run in a win over Odessa.
Top Five Finishers
Veronica Castro, Central softball – 8,239 votes.
Peyton Jones, Lake View softball – 5,692 votes.
Ryler Hunt, Christoval baseball – 3,386 votes.
Chasen Doyal, Junction baseball – 802 votes.
Jordan Chitsey, Wall softball – 743 votes.
How to nominate for the next award
Nominations for next week’s award are due by 5 p.m. Monday and can be submitted through email at sports@gosanangelo.com or by messaging the Standard-Times on X (formerly known as Twitter) @sast_sports.
Students in all varsity sports are eligible to be nominated. The poll will start on Tuesday and close at 11 a.m. Thursday. The winners will be announced afterward.
Athletes who win Athlete of the Week can not win the award twice for the same sport. An athlete can be nominated in a different sport, but can’t win the award more than three times in a school year.
