Houston Texans rookie offensive lineman Keylan Rutledge is expected to be a Day 1 contributor on the line in 2026. That’s usually the case for teams when they select a player in Round 1.
It only grows more for their playing time when a tram is willing to trade up for their services.
But will the Georgia Tech product be the only player from the class making an impact as a rookie? ESPN Field Yates doesn’t think so.
Yates recently revealed his top 20 post-Day 1 prospects who could be contributors during the 2026 season. Defensively, the first name mentioned was Ohio State defensive tackle Kayden McDonald, another prospect Houston traded significant draft capital to move up two spots and select before the initial pick.
“McDonald was the top nose tackle in this class after a breakout 2025 in coordinator Matt Patricia’s scheme at Ohio State,” Yates wrote. “McDonald had three sacks last season, but he’ll be tasked with being a dominant run defender in Houston’s overwhelming defense.
“While the Texans’ defense is at the top of the league, it needed youth at defensive tackle. McDonald should benefit from having two dominant edge rushers (Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter) drawing attention away from him.”
McDonald, who was considered a first-round talent and a top two defensive tackle prospect, comes with the production to warrant immediate reps. As the anchor of Ohio State’s defensive line, the unanimous All-American finished with 65 tackles, nine tackles for loss, three sacks and two forced fumbles as the Buckeyes secured an undefeated regular season and College Football Playoff berth.
Since being selected, McDonald has said that there’s not a single player drafted ahead of him that’s better. He’ll have a chance to meet that standard while opening running lanes for Anderson and Hunter on Sundays.
“I got to help out the defensive ends, get them to second and long, get them to third and long, let Will and Danielle and all the other guys get off the edge,” McDonald said Friday after rookie minicamp. “It’s going to work out. Three and out, get off the field, give it back to C.J. and go score.”
The Texans are expected to have the league’s No. 1 defense entering the 2026 season, largely due to the returning production and the arrivals of McDonald and others.
