El Paso under heat advisory as temperatures could reach 106 degrees

Parts of El Paso are under a heat advisory as temperatures are expected to soar above 100 degrees.

The heat advisory is in effect for portions of West Texas, including Central El Paso County, from noon until 9 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17. High temperatures may range from 102 to 106 degrees, which could cause heat-related injuries, according to the National Weather Service.

While the heat is expected to peak on Wednesday, the temperatures will cool only a few degrees by Thursday, June 18 and will remain above normal through the weekend, the National Weather Service said.

Thunderstorms forecasted in Southern New Mexico

Isolated thunderstorms are expected in Southern New Mexico in the afternoon on Wednesday, which could produce gusty winds and some blowing dust, according to the National Weather Service.

Rain chances increase on Thursday, June 18, especially in Ruidoso, which has a 40% chance of showers on Thursday and a 60% chance on Friday, June 19.

Heat illness symptoms

Infants, young children, pregnant women, older adults and people with medical conditions are more vulnerable to heat-related illness, El Paso public health officials stated in a city news release.

Call 911 if someone shows signs of heat stroke and move the person to a cooler place.

Cooling centers activated in El Paso

The city of El Paso has activated its cooling centers at recreation centers and public libraries, which provide an indoor, air-conditioned space where residents can cool off during the extreme heat.

Recreation Centers are open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday–Thursday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday. All locations are closed on Sunday.

Public libraries are open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; 1 to 6 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday (Main Library only):
