El Paso motorcyclist dies after SUV crash on Montana Avenue

An El Paso motorcyclist died at a hospital following a high-speed collision with an SUV on Montana Avenue in the East Side, a police spokesman said.

Nickolus Lucero, 36, of the East Side, died at a hospital following the crash, which occurred about 1 a.m. Sunday, June 29, in the 9600 block of Montana Avenue near McRae Boulevard, stated a police news release issued by police spokesman Officer Adrian Cisneros.

Police stated that the Special Traffic Investigations Unit determined that Lucero was riding a 2015 Yamaha YZF sports motorcycle at a high speed heading east on Montana Avenue.

At the same time, a 2021 GMC Terrain driven by Alexandra Martinez, 40, of East El Paso, exited a private driveway and began heading down Montana, police stated.

“Lucero was unable to avoid the SUV and crashed into the rear of the vehicle,” a police news release stated. Lucero was transported to a hospital, where he died of his injuries.

The factors in the fatal collision were excessive speed on the part of the motorcyclist and failure to yield the right of way on the part of the SUV, police reported.

There have been 30 traffic-related deaths in El Paso this year compared with 31 at the same time last year.

The crash was one of two fatal motorcycle collisions over the weekend. Motorcyclist Filbert Candelaria, 32, died in a collision with a vehicle at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday on Socorro Road in Socorro.
