El Paso professional boxers Victor Aranda, Jorge Tovar, Dominic Barry and Nayeli Rodriguez all faced significant moments in their careers on a King Promotions card at the El Paso County Coliseum.
On Saturday night, July 18, three of the four El Paso fighters won entertaining and hard fights, while a fourth lost but was competitive in defeat on an eight-fight card that ended at 11:36 p.m. but was well worth it.
Meanwhile, Las Cruces boxer D’Angelo Sanchez won his fight in dominant fashion.
Super middleweight Jorge Tovar remains unbeaten
In a fight that was non-stop action, Jorge Tovar (15-0) stayed unbeaten with unanimous win over Ulises Tovar (no relation) in an entertaining eight-round fight, winning 77-75, 78-74 and 78-74 on all three scorecards. Jorge Tovar was consistently busier throughout the fight, but Ulises Tovar, who is from Guanajuato, Mexico, landed his fair share of power punches and tested Jorge Tovar’s defense with constant pressure.
Ulises Tovar dropped to 12-6 with the loss. It was only Jorge Tovar’s fifth decision win in 15 fights.
Katherine Lindenmuth defeats Nayeli Rodriguez for flyweight title
Lindenmuth (8-5) won the WIBA flyweight title vs. Rodriguez (7-2-1) by split decision. Lindenmuth won 97-93 and 96-94 on two cards. Rodrtiguez won 96-94 on one card.
Lindenmuth was the consistent aggressor throughout the 10 round fight and set the tone from the onset of the fight. Rodriguez was coming on strong late in the fight but couldn’t get the stoppage or knockout she needed.
“It was an honor to be in the ring with Nayeli, she is an amazing fighter,” Lindenmuth said. “It was a great win, I fought hard and it was a tough fight.”
Added Rodriguez: “It wasn’t my best fight, but Katherine fought great. I’ll be back.”
Victor Aranda stays unbeaten
In highly competitive junior middleweight fight, which could have been fought in a phone booth, Aranda defeated New Mexico’s Elija Martinez by split decision. Aranda won 60-54 and 58-56 on two judges’ scorecards, Martinez won 58-56 on one card.
Aranda improves to 8-0 and just his second decision win, while Martinez is 7-2.
“I prepared well, but it was a tough fight and I knew it would be,” Aranda said. “My opponent was very tough.”
Cruiserweight Dominic Barry wins close call
Barry won a majority decision against Argentina’s Gustavo Brizuela with two judges scoring the fight 77-75 for Barry and one judge scoring the fight 76-76.
The two fighters were evenly matched and traded exchanges of punches throughout. Many of the eight rounds were close.
Barry is now 11-0-1 and the win was his first win by decision. Brizuela falls to 9-5.
“My opponent is strong and took me to another level,” Barry said. “It was a tough, hard fight.”
D’Angelo Sanchez shows his power
Las Cruces super flyweight D’Angelo Sanchez dominated in a first round stoppage of Albuquerque’s Austin Lewis. Sanchez showed great power in stopping Lewis at 2:08 of first round. Sanchez is now 5-1. Saturday’s win was a rematch of their March 14 fight in El Paso, which Sanchez won by four round decision. Lewis falls to 1-3.
Bantamweight Katharina Thanderez wins decision
Bantamweight Katharina Thanderez of Spain won a split decision over Michaele Nogue of Queens, New York. Thanderez won 60-54 on 2 cards. Nogue (2-8-1) won 58-56 on the other card.
El Paso super featherweight Pedro Rodarte wins again
Pedro Rodarte continued to impress early in his pro career with first round knockout of Fort Worth’s Davion Edwards. Rodarte is now 3-0 and Edwards is 0-3-1.
Alexis Araiza Mones impressive in bantamweight win
Alexis Araiza Mones of Dallas won the first fight of night with a four-round decision win over Crystal Hoy. Araiza Mones improved to 5-2-1, while Hoy of Las Vegas, Nevada, falls to 7-15-1.
