Just three series into the Pacific Coast League’s second half, the El Paso Chihuahuas are already in a hole as they get set to host another struggling team, the Albuquerque Isotopes.
El Paso won the first and last games of its six-game set with Las Vegas, but dropped the four games in between to the West division leaders and now sit in last place in the East division at 9-17, 9 1/2 games behind leader Sugar Land.
They are only half a game behind Albuquerque, so this series is a chance to escape last place.
Eddie Guerrero bobblehead giveaway
The Chihuahuas are celebrating WWE on Saturday, Aug. 1, highlighted by a giveaway of 1,500 Eddie Guerrero bobblehead dolls. The WWE legend Guerrero was inducted posthumously into the El Paso Athletics Hall of Fame in 2023.
That is part of WWE night and there also will be fireworks after the game.
Chihuahuas set season high for runs in an inning
El Paso’s series at Vegas ended on a high note Sunday night when the Chihuahuas scored 14 runs in the first four innings of a 15-9 win. Their nine-run third inning, when they sent 14 batters to the plate, was a season high.
El Paso catcher Blake Hunt went 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs for the Chihuahuas’ first multi-homer game by a player since Marcos Castañon on June 13 at Round Rock.
El Paso leads pro baseball in double plays
The Chihuahuas turned two double plays in Saturday’s 5-1 loss to Las Vegas, giving them 107, which leads all of professional baseball. By comparison, the San Francisco Giants lead the Major Leagues with 94.
Chihuahuas promotions this week
The El Paso Chihuahuas are giving away 1,500 Chico figurines on Friday, July 31, which is also Bootmakers Night.
Sunday’s game (Aug. 2) features a giveaway of Swinging Dog jerseys to 1,000 fans aged 12 and younger. That is part of Back to School Day, where fans are encouraged to bring school supplies. Kids can run the bases after the game.
