Thursday offered the Cowboys media a chance to watch the team in action, and reports of the day’s work had fans buzzing about some lesser-talked-about names. While Ryan Flournoy got some slot work in and looked good doing it, newly-signed Marquez Valdes-Scantling was the receiver to watch as he filled in for George Pickens… and the early chemistry with Dak Prescott seems to be there. Phil Mafah and Jaydon Blue also impressed, and the defense used a rotation of talent at outside corner as DaRon Bland continues to rehab his foot.
The day’s press conference generated headlines, too, with Brian Schottenheimer confirming that the team’s left tackle job may not automatically be Tyler Guyton’s. The coach praised Guyton’s athleticism but wants to see more consistency; he’s content with Guyton and seventh-rounder Nate Thomas battling it out over the summer. Guyton, for his part, is saying all the right things in response, noting that “Friendly competition isn’t bad.”
Today’s news roundup also looks at CeeDee Lamb’s early assessment of the Christian Parker defense, the sky-high expectations for rookie safety Caleb Downs, and why Dak Prescott spent his last Saturday before OTAs fishing with a total stranger and Cowboys fanatic.
We also take a spin around the NFL with other teams hitting the practice field. The Lions have lost a rookie to a season-ending injury, and Giants head coach John Harbaugh is forced to look at what’s going on to cause him to lose three of his own players to the same painful ailment. In New Orleans, running back Alvin Kamara shocked the Saints by taking a red-eye flight and showing up at OTAs, despite massive uncertainty about his status with the team.
In other league news, Christian Watson secures the bag in Green Bay (and adds ammo to George Pickens’ argument for a raise), and Mike McCarthy and the Steelers are changing the calculus at the tight end position with a $42 million deal for Darnell Washington. Meanwhile in San Francisco, future Hall of Famer Trent Williams can see the light at the end of the tunnel, and Brandon Aiyuk is a wanted man after a very questionable social media post… but ex-Cowboy Dez Bryant says something smells fishy about how the whole thing went down. Was the wideout set up to give the 49ers an easier out?
