Even with the Cowboys’ mandatory minicamp set to begin on Tuesday, the team is still looking for every possible advantage to improve the roster. On Monday, they worked out UFL edge rusher Olakunle Fatukasi. The onetime Buccaneer and Ram had a strong spring season for the Birmingham Stallions and now looks to be the next UFLer to find a home at The Star. Late reporting indicates that wide receiver Denzel Mims and defensive back Ameer Speed also got looks from Brian Schottenheimer’s staff.
But when the Cowboys file in for work on Tuesday, all eyes will be on George Pickens. The All-Pro did show up Monday for his physical and is expected to report for minicamp; how he looks and just how involved he is figures to be just one of the hot topics of the next three days. And could Phil Mafah be about to burst onto the scene?
The home of the Cowboys got a lot of airtime over the weekend, with the FIFA World Cup putting on a show from what is temporarily being called “Dallas Stadium.” From the Netherlands’ crazed orange-clad fans to the Japanese contingent going viral for cleaning up the venue after themselves (and getting Jameis Winston to pitch in), JerryWorld got more than its share of publicity. Some of it came with major side-eye, though, like the insane prices at the concession stands and the perfectly common-sense window tint that almost certainly won’t be seen again come football season.
In other NFL news, the Brendan Sorsby saga may be entering a new chapter. The embattled QB and Texas Tech have reportedly parted ways following threats of an all-out revolt from other big-time college programs and most of the rest of its own conference. Sorsby is now expected to shoot for entering the NFL’s supplemental draft and could even be coming to a training camp this summer. In Atlanta, linebacker James Pearce Sr. will be at Falcons camp, but the Defensive Rookie of the Year is still likely facing serious punishment for his felony charges. And the Jets back up the armored car for one of their top offensive linemen.
