Dave Campbell’s Texas Football first reported the news early Monday morning.

Roan has been at Abilene Cooper for the last 20 years after originally joining as an assistant football coach.

In 2011, he was promoted and served as the Cougars’ defensive coordinator for the next seven seasons. He was then elevated again in July 2018 when he was appointed as Cooper’s next head football coach following the resignation of former Cougars’ coach Todd Moebes.

Roan boasted a 52-40 overall record over the course of eight seasons as Abilene Cooper’s head football coach, which also included eight straight postseason appearances in the 5A UIL Football Playoffs.

The peak of Roan’s tenure as the Cougars’ head coach was during the 2019 Texas high school football season, when he helped guide Cooper to the regional semifinals of the 5A DI regional semifinals and an 11-2 finish.

The last time Abilene ISD hired an external candidate to serve as the head football coach at either Abilene High or Abilene Cooper was in 2006 when Mike Spradlin was hired to coach at Cooper.
