Editor’s note: The city of Corpus Christi has previously opened some of its public facilities as “cooling centers” during periods of extremely high temperatures.
The city of Corpus Christi needs to be doing more for the homeless population now that it’s summertime. We all live here and are more than familiar with the Texas heat. Unfortunately, the scorching heat isn’t just uncomfortable, it’s a death sentence.
The homeless population is exceptionally at risk because they have nowhere to cool off. This literally puts hundreds of people of the city of Corpus Christi at risk of dehydration, heatstroke, and other heat-related illnesses. Not to mention the already existing risk of mosquitoes and diseases. Yet the people most at risk get the least amount of help.
Homeless people are still people. I mean it’s in the name … homeless PEOPLE. Just because they don’t have a place to call home doesn’t mean they suddenly forfeit all of their humanity. They matter just as much as anyone else in this city. The city needs to implement more free and accessible places for the homeless to cool off. Additionally, this would also clear them off the streets, giving Corpus Christi its charm back. So please, even if they ended up being homeless by their own accord, it’s still the city’s job to look after them, especially during summertime.
