Summer may be almost over in the United States, but the heat will remain in Corpus Christi well into autumn.
A great way to cool off from the dreaded heat and accompanying humidity is by enjoying a nice cup of frozen yogurt, gelato or ice cream. And there is no better time than July 20: National Ice Cream Day.
There are several local businesses that specialize in serving sweet treats, and they also have unique flavors and one-of-a-kind concoctions.
Here are six desserts the Caller-Times discovered in Corpus Christi that you need to try out.
Coffee Waves
5738 S. Alameda St.
Next time you grab your cup of coffee at one of the five locations in the Coastal Bend, take a look at what gelato flavors Coffee Waves has to offer.
Flavors change weekly, but the stracciatella — a vanilla, sweet cream flavor with chocolate flake drizzle — is the coffee shop’s staple. All gelato flavors are house-made.

La Fresa Homemade Ice Cream & More
2818 S. Port Ave.
With more than 30 flavors of ice cream (and house-made ice pops), La Fresa has some interesting flavors, including its tequila and almond ice cream. You won’t get tipsy off it, as it’s just a flavor, but it is refreshing with a unique crunch of almonds. Be sure to check out the business’ other flavors, including Tres Leches and Ferrero Rocher.

Magnolia Grace Gelato y Mas
14254 S. Padre Island Drive
The business was previously called A La Mode Gelateria Dessert & Snack Bar until ownership was transferred in September 2022.
If you’re looking for dairy- or sugar-free gelato, know that Magnolia Grace has your back. Aside from its tasty banana pudding gelato, some other fun flavors include green apple, walnut, blueberry mascarpone and pink grapefruit.

Rock and Rollin
2033 Airline Road
Inspired by Bangkok cuisine, Rock and Rollin starts its treat as a liquid with cookies, candy or another confection mixed in, and then minutes later roll up firm pieces of ice cream in a cup served with other assortments of toppings.
There are several specialty ice creams, including Rock and Rollin’s Match Lady. The dessert comes with matcha (green tea) ice cream and strawberries.

Scoopy’s
13313 S. Padre Island Drive
Located right next to the JFK Causeway on North Padre Island, Scoopy’s is part of Snoopy’s Pier on Sunset Island.
The ice cream shop also serves salads and sandwiches, but be sure to grab a cup of Blue Bell ice cream or one of its signature desserts, such as the Chocolate Barnacle. The sweet treat comes with a sugar cookie crumble base, cookies and cream ice cream, chocolate mousse, chocolate syrup, whipped cream, a waffle flower and a cherry.

Sweet Swirl
14457 S. Padre Island Drive
Sweet Swirl is the only local frozen yogurt shop in Corpus Christi, and can be found on North Padre Island.
When selecting your “froyo” flavor, don’t forget to select your add-ons including Pop-Tarts, fresh fruit, gummy worms and more. Be careful, though — you get charged $0.79 an ounce, so be sure not to go too crazy.
