BREAKING: Miller hires David McHugh as next head football coach, athletic coordinator

After one year as head coach at Bishop, David McHugh is taking over one of the most successful programs over the last decade in the Coastal Bend.

McHugh, 31, was named the next head coach and athletic coordinator at Miller by CCISD, replacing Justen Evans, who spearheaded the program’s renaissance in a decade at the helm of the Bucs.

McHugh, an Ingleside and McMurry graduate, was a standout player for the Mustangs before coaching stops at Mathis, Taft, Ingleside and his lone season as a head coach at Bishop.

The Badgers were 5-6 in District 16-3A Division I, reaching the playoffs in 2025.

Evans left to lead Denton Braswell in February after going 77-33 in nine seasons at Miller, including three district titles and seven consecutive playoff berths. He surpassed the legendary Pete Ragus in 2023 as the school’s all-time coaching wins leader.

In the three seasons prior to Evans’ arrival, the Bucs won three games combined.

McHugh’s twin brother, Matthew, currently on staff at SMU, previously spent time as an assistant with Miller under Evans.

His wife, Ashley McHugh, is the head girls basketball coach at Sinton, where she has led the program to two consecutive regional semifinal appearances. The couple has two daughters, Riley and Jordyn.
