Austin police have announced an arrest connected to the killing of an South Austin man who wrote for Infowars.
Eloy Adrian Camarillo, 17, was arrested April 30, according to a Thursday news release from the Austin Police Department, in relation to the death of Jamie White, and is being charged with capital murder, police say.
Camarillo is the first person arrested in the March 9 death of White, 36. White was allegedly trying to stop his car from being stolen at the Chandelier Apartments in the 2300 block of Douglas Street, when he was shot, according to previous information from police.
Police said multiple pieces of evidence, including surveillance camera footage, helped investigators narrow onto Camarillo. “Thank you to the community members who submitted tips through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program. … Your willingness to come forward with information played a critical role in ensuring justice and maintaining the safety of our neighborhoods,” the Facebook post announcing the arrest reads.
APD detective Jason Jones, who was leading the investigation, said in a March news conference that either one or multiple individuals were trying to steal White’s Kia from the parking lot of his apartment complex when the writer “interrupted” the burglars.
White was then shot in the parking lot, where authorities found him. He was pronounced deceased at 12:19 a.m. at a local hospital.
Kia vehicles have drawn national attention for the past several years because of a spike in theft increases due to poor security measures. Police also cited Kia’s believed ease of accessibility as a factor, though the company denied those charges to the Statesman.
It is unclear if there are any other suspects in the case.
