The National Weather Service in Lubbock has issued watches for extreme cold and possible heavy snowfall in the Texas Panhandle area, anticipated to impact the region starting Friday through the weekend.
Due to Winter Storm Fern and out of an abundance of caution, the following schools, businesses and institutions have issued closings, early releases or delays:
Lubbock area public schools
Abernathy ISD
Abernathy ISD will operate on an early release schedule on Friday, with dismissal at 12:30 p.m. Buses will run at 12:45. All-Region Band events have been moved up. Participating students are expected toreturn to the district around 2 p.m.
Brownfield ISD
Browfield ISD will be releasing early at noon on Friday. All after school ACE programs are canceled.
Floydada ISD
Floydada canceled all classes and will reopen Monday.
Frenship ISD
Frenship ISD canceled all classes Friday.
Idalou ISD
Idalou ISD will be releasing early at 1 p.m. Friday.
Levelland ISD
Elementary campuses will release early at noon and secondary campuses will release at 12:45 p.m.
Littlefield ISD
Littlefield ISD canceled all classes for Friday, Jan. 23.
Lubbock ISD
Lubbock ISD canceled all classes for Friday, Jan. 23. All schools and administrative offices will be closed and district employees will have a planning day working from home. Meals will be provided to Lubbock ISD students from 10 to 11 a.m. at Coronado, Estacado, Lubbock and Monterey high schools.
Lubbock-Cooper ISD
Elementary campuses will release early at noon and secondary campuses will release at 12:45 p.m. Lunches will be served, and buses will run on the earlier schedule.
New Deal ISD
New Deal ISD will be releasing early at 1 p.m. Friday.
Plainview ISD
Plainview ISD canceled all classes for Friday.
Ralls ISD
Ralls ISD will be releasing early at noon on Friday.
Roosevelt ISD
Roosevelt ISD will be releasing early at 12:45 p.m. on Friday. Buses will run at 1 p.m.
Shallowater ISD
Shallowater ISD will be releasing early at 1 p.m. Friday.
Slaton ISD
Slaton ISD will be releasing early at 1 p.m. Friday.
Lubbock area private schools
Christ the King Schools
On-Campus Learning at CTKDS is closed for Friday, with students to pivot to virtual learning for Friday.
Kingdom Preparatory Academy
Canceled all classes for Friday, Jan. 23.
Trinity Christian School
Canceled all classes for Friday, Jan. 23.
Harmony Science Academy Lubbock
Canceled all classes for Friday, Jan. 23.
Lubbock area colleges, universities
Texas Tech University
Texas Tech University’s Lubbock campus will close early at noon on Friday.
All university-sponsored (non-athletics) events are canceled for the rest of the day.
Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center
TTUHSC on-campus operations, activities and classes are canceled on Friday, January 23, 2026.
Clinics will operate as scheduled. All remote curricular activities will continue as planned. TTUHSC encourages the campus community to check for further communications from their school or division.
South Plains College
All South Plains College campuses will be closing early at noon on Friday.
Government and public offices
Lubbock County
The Lubbock County Courthouse will open at noon Monday, Jan. 26. Lubbock County Commissioners Court will convene at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
Covenant Health Levelland clinics will close Friday at 2 p.m. Please note that the emergency room will remain open 24/7 to serve patients with any emergencies.
Palo Duro Canyon State Park encourages visitors to delay travel, and all scheduled programs for this weekend are canceled. Water to campsites and restrooms will likely be frozen, and there is a large possibility of power loss. Outdoor activities are strongly discouraged, and the park road may need to close due to ice and snow. Anyone staying in the canyon must be prepared to remain for multiple days, including bringing extra food and drinking water and having alternate sources of heat (the park is currently under a burn ban).
