Communities across the United States are preparing for a national day of action to protest the Trump administration’s continued detention of tens of thousand immigrants and their plans to expand detention.

Organizations like Disappeared In America, Detention Watch Network and Indivisible are preparing to hold the Communities Not Cages National day of action to stop ICE warehouses and detention on Saturday, April 25. Over 160 protests are planned, according to organizers, to protest the expansion of detention and inhumane conditions.

The same groups have been involved in the nationwide No Kings protests, which have drawn millions to the streets to demonstrate against President Donald Trump’s policies.

Here is what you need to know about the protests and where they are going to be:

What is the Communities Not Cages National day of action?

The protests are being held as the Trump administration is looking to expand detention capacity by transforming the purchase of mega-distribution warehouses across the country into detention centers. The administration is hoping to add 80,000 more beds to house detained immigrants.

One of the planned detention centers is located in Socorro, Texas. The three warehouses are poised to hold up to 8,500 people and have received widespread condemnation from El Pasoans.

The Department of Homeland Security has paused the purchase of new warehouses but will continue to advance the conversion of facilities already purchased.

El Paso has become the center of the Trump administration’s policies of mass detention and deportation of immigrants. The administration opened the massive detention center known as Camp East Montana, which is poised to hold up to 5,000 immigrants.

The detention center has been plagued by rights abuses and controversy, including the Jan 3 death of Geraldo Campos Lunas, whose death was ruled a homicide by the Office of the Medical Examiner of El Paso County. Democrats, including Veronica Escobar, D-El Paso, have called for the closure of the massive detention center.

The number of immigrants detained by the U.S. government has exploded under the Trump administration, with over 75,000 immigrants held at the height of detention in January 2026. There are currently just over 60,000 immigrants detained by ICE, according to data from ICE compiled by researchers with Detentionreport.com.

Where is the protest in El Paso?

Organizers with Indivisible the 915 are planning to hold a march outside Camp East Montana on Saturday, April 25, at 10 a.m.

The group is calling people to gather in the Brio park-and-ride in front of the detention center at George Dieter Drive and Montana Avenue. The march will bring together local residents, faith leaders, advocates, students, and families.
