A woman shot in the head in Over-the-Rhine in June recently died of her injuries, according to the Hamilton County Coroner’s Office.
Sheteaka R. Mitchell, 49, died July 25 after being shot in the head shortly after midnight June 4, Enquirer media partner Fox 19 reported at the time.
Cincinnati police Captain Stephen Bower, the night chief, told Fox 19 officers had responded to the 1400 block of Walnut Street after a call came in about a shooting. An officer nearby had heard several shots before the call came out and ShotSpotter detected multiple gunshots fired in the area, he said.
Police found Mitchell with a gunshot wound to the left side of her head. She was transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
Bower said a suspect fired his gun from the parking lot of the Shell gas station on Liberty Street before fleeing “in an unknown way.” It is unclear if police have apprehended the suspect.
The Enquirer has reached out to department spokesman Lt. Jonathan Cunningham for more information and requested documents related to the shooting.
North of Liberty Street in Over-the-Rhine hot spot for criminal activity
North of Liberty Street and the area surrounding the Shell gas station have been a hot spot for criminal activity for years.
Ten years ago, Cincinnati police were stopping at the Shell an average of 2.5 times per day. While that average has improved, officers still make an average of two visits every day to the gas station, according to an Enquirer review of calls for service in June.
A week after Mitchell was shot, two other people were shot, one fatally, near the gas station.
