CANTON − An 18-year-old woman died after drowning in a pool at her home in the 2400 block of 10th Street SW on the evening of Aug. 6, investigators said.
Jamehia Smothers apparently had a medical emergency in the pool while she was swimming, according to a Canton police report.
The drowning was reported at 6:32 p.m. A woman who called 911 said her cousin had drowned, was out of the water and was not breathing.
“It is unknown how long she was under the water,” the police report said. “No foul play suspected and no evidence located on scene.”
They wrote that the small rectangular pool was about 4 feet deep and located in the back yard.
Patrolmen Trevor Stern and Spencer Zernechel, the first to arrive, found Smothers in the back yard on her back. Zernechel started CPR before Canton paramedics arrived.
Members of Smothers’ family were present.
Family members told police she had a history of seizures. A family member said he came home to find Smothers in the pool, face-down in an inflatable tube. Police wrote that the family member jumped in, pulled Smothers out and started CPR.
Canton Fire Department Battalion Chief Dan Reed said medics transported her to Aultman Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 7:05 p.m.
