Nathan A. McAtee, 23, pleaded guilty May 29 to aggravated murder in Portage County Common Pleas Court. Sentencing is pending a report from the court’s adult probation office.

McAtee faces up to life in prison without the possibility of parole, according to court records. He could also be fined up to $25,000.

Windham police said they responded about 1:45 a.m. April 19, 2022 to 911 calls of a stabbing at a Cloverleaf Road apartment and found Joseph McAtee dead inside. According to court records, the weapon was identified as a sword.

McAtee has undergone psychiatric evaluations and treatment for a time after he was found to be incompetent to stand trial. However, he was ultimately determined to have been sane at the time of the offense.

In a plea deal, other charges in a grand jury indictment were dismissed, including two counts each of murder and assault.

McAtee previously was held in the Portage County Jail on a $2 million bond, but after his plea, Judge Laurie J. Pittman ordered him held without bond.
