There are 113 people sitting on Ohio’s death row.

Some were sentenced to death decades ago, for murders committed in the 1980s and 1990s. Others were convicted within the past several years. None of them will be executed any time soon.

Gov. Mike DeWine imposed a de facto moratorium on executions that’s expected to last until he leaves office in 2027. For the people on death row, that means more time to appeal their cases or reprieves for previously scheduled executions.

To be eligible for the death penalty in Ohio, the defendant must be at least 18 at the time of the crime and convicted of aggravated murder with certain factors. That includes killing a child or police officer, murder for hire and committing murder in tandem with another serious crime.
