A man is dead after being shot by West Chester Township police, according to township officials.
Officers were called around 9:50 p.m. on June 4 to an apartment complex on Zinnia Court after a resident reported a woman screaming for help inside a neighboring apartment, officials said in a news release.
When police arrived at the apartment, the release states, they knocked on the door, announced their presence and made their way inside out of concern for the residents’ safety.
Officers were performing a “protective search” of the apartment when they encountered a man inside a bedroom, officials said, and a shooting took place. It’s currently unclear what prompted police to use their service weapons or how many officers opened fire.
The man, whose identity hasn’t been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was taken to a hospital for minor injuries. No officers were seriously injured during the incident.
The township has requested that the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation conduct an independent investigation into the shooting. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, according to an afternoon June 5 update.
West Chester Township said it plans to host a press conference to discuss the shooting, but a date and time have not been announced.
