Have you noticed some scaffolding around Union Bank Co. this week?
The bank’s exterior is under renovation for a variety of building improvements. Bank Manager Brandy Imbody explained the bank’s windows, awnings and parking lot will be redone over the next few months.
While community member might not see a noticeable difference with those improvements, they will notice the new paint job. The colors haven’t been finalized, but Imbody confirmed it will be different from the current gray and white exterior.
The building’s main entrance remains open during construction, but sidewalks around the building are closed. Imbody hopes renovations will finish by the Marion Popcorn Festival on Sept. 10. If the project isn’t concluded by that weekend, construction workers will dismantle the scaffolding before resuming construction after the festival is over.
Imbody explained the project has been in the works for more than a year, but the company only added the renovations to the budget this year.
The building which houses the Union Bank Co. is housed in the Bennett Building, a historic structure in Marion which opened in 1890 as a clothing store. The building has been home for many businesses in Marion’s history, most notably the Marion County Bank in 1908 and the Marion Bank in 1988.
The interior of the building still has many of the historic elements left behind by banks past, including a large vault.
