TSA banned power banks in checked luggage. This one just got recalled over fires, explosions

A month after the TSA banned portable chargers and power banks containing lithium-ion batteries in checked bags, electronics manufacturer Anker has recalled more than 1 million power banks due to fire and burn hazards from its lithium-ion batteries, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced.

Portable chargers can now only be stored inside carry-on bags or kept inside the aircraft cabin. Anker’s power banks contain a lithium-ion battery, which falls under the same TSA restrictions.

Anker’s power banks were sold at Amazon, eBay, and other online retailers. Here’s what to know about the recall.

Anker recalls over 1 million power banks; 19 fire and explosion incidents reported

In the recall notice, Anker said it received 19 reports of fires and explosions as well as two minor burn injuries. The company adds that there have been 11 reports of property damage totaling over $60,700.

Which model of Anker power banks were recalled?

Check for the Anker PowerCore 10000 power banks with model number A1263. Both the model numbers and the serial numbers are found at the bottom of the power bank.

Only model number A1263 power banks sold in the U.S. with qualifying serial numbers are included in the recall, but customers can verify online on Anker’s website.

Where were the recalled power banks sold?

The power banks were sold online at Anker, Amazon, Newegg and eBay from June 2016 through December 2022 for about $27, the safety commission notes.

What to do if you bought the recalled power bank from Anker

Immediately stop using the power bank. You can request a free replacement from Anker.

Don’t throw the recalled power bank in the trash or recycling since there’s a greater risk of fire. Instead, Anker says customers should contact their local municipal household hazardous waste (HHW) collection center for guidance on how to dispose of it.

Ohio Environmental Protection Agency advises customers to check the Ohio EPA recycling directory to find locations that accept batteries from residents. Batteries Plus stores will also accept most battery types from residents for free, the agency notes.

What checked items are banned by TSA?

Portable chargers and power banks containing lithium-ion batteries can only be packed in carry-on bags and kept inside the aircraft cabin, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Lithium batteries can pose a fire hazard as they are subject to overheating and creating sparks, especially if damaged.

The rule applies to electronics and external battery chargers that contain a lithium-ion battery, which cannot be stored inside checked bags. This includes:

To see which items are allowed or banned on board, check the TSA’s online search function.
