Talk About Woodville celebrates Easter Egg Scramble

Although it was a tad chilly, the sun was shining and March 28 was beautiful for the Woodville Business and Community Association’s annual Easter Egg Scramble at Trail Marker Park. Lots of kiddos and their families showed up to see the Easter Bunny, collect eggs and snack on homemade cookies.

“It was such a good turnout,” said Mary Paul, one of the event organizers.

After organizing the hunt for more than 25 years, co-chairwomen Deb Grove and Mary Paul have announced it was their last year. They have decided that it is time to hand over the totes with 1,400 plastic eggs to someone new.

With so many years of filling hundreds of eggs with treats, Grove had a tried-and-true system to line up the tops and bottoms to match sizes and colors, then filling the eggs as she watched her favorite TV shows.

“This is me and my co-conspirator, Mary Paul’s, last year of co-chairing this event … my last plastic egg has snapped closed,” Grove said. “It’s been a great run — 40-plus years for me — and now it’s time for someone else to step up. Thank you to our families for being there to help scatter the eggs. A special thank you goes out to Pam Keaton for her many years helping to fill eggs and Laura Garcia for years of making the delicious cookies.”

4th of July Schedule

To give everyone plenty of time to plan accordingly, the Woodville 4th of July Committee announced that this year’s fireworks show will take place on the night of July 2, not the usual July 4 night show.

July 2 was not the committee’s first choice, as they prefer to stick to Saturday, July 4, the final night of the festival. However, the fireworks vendor is not available on July 4, as they prioritize events that always shoot on the same date every year, which meant that they were completely booked for both July 3 and July 4.

Since Woodville usually schedules fireworks on Saturday night, the date for their fireworks show changes from year to year. With the 4th of July falling on Saturday, the committee had to choose either Thursday, July 2, or Sunday, July 5. After discussing the pros and cons, the committee opted for July 2 with July 5 as a rain date.

“We have been working with this fireworks company for about 12-15 years and have always received compliments for the shows that they provide for us,” one committee member said. “When we’re spending that much money for fireworks, we want to stick with a company that we know and trust. We don’t want to risk our show on a less-than-wonderful display.”

Because of the schedule shift, several other events will have new time slots. The car show will move from July 2 to July 4 from 2-5 p.m. Water Fun with the Woodville Fire Department will also be rescheduled. However, the 5K Race and One Mile Fun Run will be Friday night, July 3, as usual.

The 4th of July Committee is working on a new version of their website, as the old one has become too cumbersome to update. The new site will debut in the next few weeks and visitors will be able to check the event schedule. Meanwhile, updates can be found on their Facebook page at @Woodville4th.

The dates for this year’s celebration are July 2-4.
