Bridge replacement project
SUGAR CREEK TWP. ‒ The Stark County Engineer’s Office plans to replace the Northvale Avenue bridge over Sugar Creek. Environmental reviews are underway, and comments about the project can be submitted until Oct. 17 by contacting Scott Basinger or through the website www.starkcountyohio.gov/engineer and clicking on “Contact Us.”
The new bridge will be 65 feet long and made of prestressed concrete beams. The project is set to start in summer 2026 with an estimated cost of $900,000. Construction will last about three months.
During this time, Northvale will be closed at the bridge with traffic detoured via U.S. Route 62, U.S. Route 250, Alabama Avenue and Foxfield Street. Property access will remain open, and signs will provide route details.

Horror on the Big Screen series
CANTON – The Palace Theatre, 605 Market Ave. N, will present “Scary Movie” at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 3 as part of the Horror on the Big Screen film series. Doors open at 7 p.m. Horror on the Big Screen is the Canton Palace Theatre’s monthlong series of horror films. Tickets are $10 general admission.
A double feature of classic Alfred Hitchcock movies, “The Birds” and “Psycho,” will be at 5:30 and 8 p.m. Oct. 4, respectively. Doors open at 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 for both movies.

Concert celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month
CANTON – The Canton Symphony Orchestra will present “MasterWorks I: Six Strings & A Symphony,” a special concert celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 4 at Umstattd Hall, 2331 17th St. NW.
The guest conductor will be Wesley Schulz. The evening features Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, Falla’s El sombrero de tres picos, Suite No. 1, Mozart’s Overture to The Marriage of Figaro, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4.

Veterans’ Resource Fair
GREEN – The eighth annual Veterans’ Resource Fair will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 3 and 4 at the MAPS Air Museum, 2260 International Parkway.
Services available include Veterans Affairs benefits, compensation and pension benefits; Veterans Affairs claims and appeals; National Guard and Reserve benefits; and financial assistance information, health insurance information, housing assistance, drug and alcohol treatment, employment information, therapy programs, gaming programs, equestrian programs, social opportunities, art therapy and therapy dogs.

Freedom Fund Banquet
JACKSON TWP. – The annual Stark County NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet will be held Oct. 17 at the Kent State Conference Center, 6000 Frank Ave. NW.
The keynote speaker is Leon Bibb, a news anchor and commentator for WKYC in Cleveland. He was the first African American primetime news anchor in Ohio.
A cocktail hour will be from 5 to 6 p.m., dinner will begin at 6, and the program will start at 7. The NAACP’s theme for 2025 is “The Fierce Urgency of Now,” which emphasizes the need for action in the ongoing struggle for civil rights and social justice. National Inventors Hall of Fame has new CEO
LAKE TWP. – The National Inventors Hall of Fame recently appointed Monica Jones as its new chief executive officer. Jones succeeds Michael J. Oister, who stepped down as CEO after 12 years.
Jones joined the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2011 and was named chief operating officer in 2015. She earned her Master of Business Administration degree from East Texas A&M University and bachelor’s degree from the University of Akron.
Women of the Rock Hall tribute show set
MASSILLON – The Women of the Rock Hall tribute show will be from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Lions Lincoln Theatre, 156 Lincoln Way E.
