Stabbing by adopted son killed Mark Rayburn-Velco, police say

An Ohio State University employee died May 24 after he was stabbed by his adopted son, Columbus police said.

Police responded to a stabbing on Columbus’ North Side and found two people injured. One of them was Mark Rayburn-Velco, who died from his injuries.

A 17-year-old boy was charged in his death. A Columbus police spokesperson has confirmed the boy was Velco’s adopted son.

What happened in the stabbing that killed a 58-year old OSU employee?

Officers responded to a stabbing on the 2600 block of Glen Echo Drive at about 7 a.m., according to a Columbus police news release.

When they arrived, they found two adult victims suffering from stab wounds, according to the news release. Medics transported both to a local hospital in critical condition.

One of the adults will survive their injuries, but Mark Rayburn-Velco, 58, was pronounced dead at 7:58 a.m., police said.

Columbus police Sgt. Joe Albert said the division does not have any information to share about what led up to the stabbing at this time.

Who was Mark Rayburn-Velco?

Velco was an IT project manager at OSU, university spokesperson Ben Johnson said. Johnson could not immediately say how long he had been employed at the university.

“Ohio State is mourning the loss of colleague and friend, Mark Rayburn-Velco, who passed away on Sunday, May 24,” Johnson said. “Mark was an integral member of the team at Ohio State.”

The university is reaching out to Mark’s coworkers to provide support, Johnson said.

Police have not identified the other adult who was injured.

Who is the suspect in the killing?

A 17-year-old boy was charged with murder and felonious assault, police said in an updated release May 25. The Dispatch is not naming the boy at this time.

Albert confirmed the boy was Velco’s adopted son.
