A fire April 16 in the 100 block of East Voris Street in South Akron damaged a house and a duplex and sent thick black smoke billowing over the University Park and downtown areas around 2:30 p.m.
A downpour aided with tamping down the smoke at the site directly across from the U.S. Post Office on Wolf Ledges Parkway.
Crews continued to work at the scene after the rainshower lifted. One of the houses, adjacent to LifeSource Ministries Church, appeared to be heavily burned out.
There were no reported injuries, according to Tawanna Young, Akron Fire Department public information officer. The cause and origin of the fire were unknown.
Residents were able to leave the homes themselves and firefighters rescued two dogs.
Three adults and one child were displaced, Young said. The American Red Cross was notified and arrived to the fire.
