SNY Mets' Gelbs calls Skyline Chili worse than vending machine burrito

SNY TV reporter Steve Gelbs returned to Great American Ball Park for the New York Mets’ series against the Cincinnati Reds, and didn’t have good things to say about the Skyline Chili cheese coney.

“I’m not trying to be hyperbolic,” Gelbs said after trying the coney during the broadcast. “I’d rather have a vending machine burrito. I’m not kidding.”

In 2024, Gelbs tried a burrito from a vending machine outside the network’s truck at GABP, and called it “maybe the most vile thing that we have experienced in nearly two decades on the air.”

“I know everybody’s really into the new food offerings here at all the ballparks, but they don’t really seem to care about our crew,” Gelbs added during the 2024 SNY broadcast.

In 2021, SNY play-by-play announcer Gary Cohen blasted Skyline Chili during a Mets-Reds broadcast, saying “this is supposed to be food that you actually eat. … Try it once, and then you’ll never eat it again.”

AJ Ewing, Springboro HS grad, came to Skyline Chili’s defense.

Mets rookie outfielder AJ Ewing, who attended Springboro High School, talked to Gelbs after the series finale.

Ewing had told Gelbs he needed to try a Skyline cheese coney while he was in Cincinnati.

“You said you love them, and I found them appauling,” Gelbs told Ewing.

“Listen, Cincinnati isn’t Cincinnati without the cheese coney,” Ewing replied. “I understand that some people might not like it. I like it. But everyone that’s from Cincinnati pretty much loves it. So I think you might be the odd man out here on this one.”
