With the Cincinnati Reds hovering around the .500 mark as July approaches and the Aug. 3 trade deadline looms, some Major League Baseball experts have them as summer sellers.
Cincinnati Reds beat writer Gordon Wittenmyer comprised his list June 15 along with contract details.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel on June 17, compiled a list of 100 players who are potential trade candidates, and there are five current Reds on the list, along with four former Reds.
First baseman/designated hitter Nathaniel Lowe
The Reds are Lowe’s fifth team, and coming into their June 17 game with the Mets, the 6-foot-4, 220-pound Lowe was hitting .253 with nine home runs and 25 RBIs. Lowe is ranked No. 45 on the ESPN Top 100 list. In 2022, Lowe hit .302 for the Texas Rangers with 27 homers and 76 RBIs.
Designated hitter/third baseman Eugenio Suárez
Though he just returned from a stay on the injured list (IL), Suárez is listed as No. 49 despite hitting just .217 with seven homers and 25 RBIs (as of June 16). The 5-foot-11, 213-pound Suárez previously played for the Reds between 2015 and 2021 with his best season coming in 2019 when he slammed 49 homers with 103 RBIs, hitting .271.
Right-handed pitcher Brady Singer
The 6-foot-5, 215-pound Singer is 3-6 with a 5.32 ERA. Singer is No. 50 on the ESPN list. After five seasons with the Kansas City Royals, he won a career-high 14 games for the Reds last year.
Left-handed pitcher Brock Burke
The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Burke is 2-3 with a 2.83 ERA and one save for the Reds. He is No. 55 on the ESPN list. In 2022 with the Rangers and last season with the Los Angeles Angels, he won a career-best seven games. So far this season, he has his best ERA since posting a 1.97 mark with the Angels in 2022.
Left-handed pitcher Caleb Ferguson
The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Ferguson has a 1.93 ERA for the Reds in nine appearances. He is No. 65 on the ESPN list. He twice won seven games for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2018 and 2023. Thus far, this season’s ERA is his best since finishing with a 1.82 in 37 games with the Dodgers in 2022.
Former Reds on ESPN Top 100 trade candidate list
No. 8 – Aroldis Chapman, 0.44 ERA with 14 saves for the Boston Red Sox. Pitched for the Reds between 2010 and 2015 with his best season being 2012, when he had a 1.51 ERA with 38 saves and a 5-5 record. Chapman’s suitors are believed to be the Seattle Mariners, Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago White Sox, Dodgers, Tampa Bay Rays, Philadelphia Phillies, Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs.
No. 15 – Sonny Gray, 8-1 for the Boston Red Sox with a 3.03 ERA. Pitched for the Reds between 2019 and 2021, winning 11 games in 2019. His career-high is 14 wins, which he accomplished for Oakland in 2014 and 2015 and with the St. Louis Cardinals last season.
No. 84 – Zack Littell, 6-5 with a 5.32 ERA for the Washington Nationals. He was 2-0 for the Reds last season. Combined with eight wins with Tampa Bay before coming to the Reds, he won a career-best 10 games.
No. 86 – Michael Lorenzen, 2-8 with a 7.13 ERA for the Colorado Rockies. Lorenzen was a Red from 2015 to 2021. His best season was 2017 when he went 8-4 in 70 games.
