Sauce Gardner, Jets cornerback from UC, in concussion protocol ahead of Week 8 vs Bengals

New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner, a former University of Cincinnati Bearcats standout, is in the NFL’s concussion protocol, according to Jets head coach Aaron Glenn.

Gardner’s status for the Jets’ Week 8 game against the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium isn’t known. Gardner did not practice Wednesday.

In addition, Jets receiver Garrett Wilson missed the team’s Week 7 loss to Carolina because of a knee injury. He did not practice Wednesday, and his status for Week 8 is to be determined.

The Jets reportedly are expected to start Tyrod Taylor at quarterback over Justin Fields.

Gardner, who was selected fourth overall by the Jets in the 2022 NFL draft, lobbied in 2023 for the team to add longtime Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Gardner, named a Pro Bowler in 2022 and 2023, showed support for Buffalo Bills defensive back Damar Hamlin after Hamlin was injured in Cincinnati.

Gardner wears the No. 1 he wore at UC after paying teammate D.J. Reed for the number.
