Roundup: Mahoney dominant for Licking Heights in opening victory

DELAWARE ― Natalie Mahoney pitched a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts and no walks as visiting Licking Heights opened its season on March 24 with a 2-0 shutout of Buckeye Valley.

Granville rallies

Avary King’s fielder’s choice chased home the winning run on March 24, capping a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh as Granville came back for an 8-7 win against visiting Bishop Hartley.

The Blue Aces (2-0) trailed 7-3 in the sixth, before Aubrey Lackey smacked a two-run homer. She had three RBIs.

King had a double and single and Jillian Brownfield a two-run single for Granville, while Sydney Cottrill added a single and RBI. Josie Opfer pitched an inning to get the win in relief of Kaylee Watkins.

Watkins romps

Emma Jellison belted a three-run homer and single and Gracie Gearhardt hit three singles with two RBIs as host Watkins Memorial opened its season with a 16-3 five-inning win against Hilliard Darby on March 24.

Paisley Conley had a two-run double, Ava Bailey two singles and two RBIs and Alli Langwasser doubled with an RBI for the Warriors.

Cori Groothuis scattered eight hits, striking out two and walking two to get the win.

Fletcher stars

Kenzie Fletcher had a triple and two doubles, knocking in four runs, as Utica defeated visiting Reynoldsburg 17-2 on March 24.

Addi Moore drove in three runs with a double and single for the winners (1-1), while Leigha Burnett had three singles and two RBIs, Katie Kidd two singles and two RBIs, Baleigh Torrens and Kaitlin Evans doubled with an RBI and Emily Meyers chipped in with a single and RBI.

Lakewood rolls

Anna Crist hit a solo homer and two singles and three RBIs while winning reliever Averie Adams and Briana Hoisington each had a double and three singles in Lakewood’s 14-3 six-inning win at Worthington Kilbourne on March 24.

Hoisington went 4 for 4 and Adams 4 for 5 with an RBI for the Lancers (1-1), who scored eight runs in the sixth. Jaycie Montie scored three runs and doubled and singled with an RBI, and Katie Tolliver had three RBIs.

Northridge nipped

Bexley rallied for three runs in the seventh inning to spoil visiting Northridge’s season opener by a 6-5 count on March 24.

Kadance Adkins ripped a double and two singles and Nya Van Ostran had three singles with an RBI for the Vikings. Losing pitcher Gracie Smith, who allowed just three earned runs with seven strikeouts and no walks, added two singles with an RBI. Cheyann Severance tripled, Ryleigh Myers doubled with an RBI and Ashlynn Mauger singled with an RBI.

Newark falls on road

Visiting Newark managed just two hits in a 10-0 five-inning loss to Central Crossing on March 24.

Lexi Shanaberg singled and stole a base, and Eden Wachaya also singled for the Wildcats (1-1).

Heath defeated

Visiting Gahanna used a nine-run second inning to down Heath 15-4 in five innings in the Bulldogs’ season opener on March 24.

Natalie Blakely singled in a run and stole home, while Addison Purdy also had a run-scoring hit for Heath.

BOYS LACROSSE

Johnstown wins

Will Taylor’s four goals and an assist and Logan Brown’s two goals and two assists helped visiting Johnstown avenge last year’s tournament loss with a 10-4 win against John Glenn on March 24.

Zeke Severs added two goals and an assist, Jason Hetinger a goal and an assist, Hayden Norman a goal and Gabe Schneider an assist for the Johnnies. Ben Smith had 10 saves.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Newark victorious

Miles Drake had 15 assists, 16 kills and nine digs on March 24 as Newark (2-2) rallied past Delaware 25-19, 18-25, 18-25, 25-23, 15-10.

Zalyn Hanzey added 13 kills, 16 digs and six aces, while Koby Watson had 18 assists, 15 kills, 12 digs and six aces for the Wildcats.
