Roundup: Gilbert fuels Newark in win at Pickerington Central

Ty Gilbert racked up 27 points, burying a trio of 3-pointers Feb. 3, shooting the Newark boys basketball team to a 59-46 victory at Pickerington Central (10-5, 7-3) in Ohio Capital Conference-Buckeye Division play.

The first-place Wildcats (18-1, 11-0), who remained a game ahead of Reynoldsburg in the loss column, led 24-14 at halftime and 44-29 after three quarters. Tybron Brooks added 17 points and Jake Quackenbush 12 points, 11 rebounds and three assists.

GCA beats buzzer

Aidan Rhoads’ layup off a back-door pass from Josh Benvie with two seconds left lifted Granville Christian to a 36-34 victory against visiting Northside Christian (2-16, 2-10) in Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League play.

Benvie scored 10 points to lead the Lions (4-13, 4-7), who had a 6-3 edge in the fourth quarter. Ayden Hernandez added 9 points and Rhoads 8.

Heights beats Northridge

Mohamed Diallo recorded 17 points to lead three scorers in double figures, sparking Licking Heights in a 73-59 victory against visiting Northridge to clinch at least a share of a sixth consecutive Licking County League-Buckeye Division championship.

Yannick Trion and Tip Davis added 11 points apiece and Sean Chandler 9 for the Hornets (14-3, 12-0), who jumped out to a 21-12 lead after one quarter. 

Benjamin Hilton, who hit a trio of 3-pointers, and Titus Hardin led the Vikings (3-14, 1-11) with 15 points apiece.

Utica outlasts Valley

Kamden Hall’s shot from the paint in the final seconds gave Utica a 73-71 double-overtime victory at Licking Valley in LCL play.

Nate Hite stole the ensuing inbound pass to preserve the win for Utica (7-9, 5-7). Hunter McKinney piled up 23 points, and Weston Simon added 21.

Zane Hancock scored 16 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter and overtime periods to lead the Panthers (6-9, 4-8), who hit 14 3-pointers. Gideon Riley added 12 points and Carter Nethers 10. 

Liberty wins at home

MJ Glenn scored all 8 of Liberty Christian’s points in the two overtime periods, lifting the Eagles to a 55-54 double-overtime victory against visiting Madison Christian (1-17, 1-10) in MOCAL play.

Glenn buried five 3-pointers, erupting for 23 of his 29 points after halftime. Eli Hatton added 9 points for the Eagles (5-10, 5-7).

Johnstown falls on road

A fourth-quarter charge for Johnstown fell short in a 47-42 loss at Zanesville (9-8, 6-5) in LCL play.

Greyson Goodman scored 11 points, including a trio of 3-pointers for the Johnnies (12-3, 9-2), who trailed 36-23 after three quarters and saw their Cardinal Division lead over Heath trimmed to a game. Ace Lowery added 10 points and John Eckenrode 8.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Newark drops home game

A 17-7 edge in the fourth quarter allowed first-place Pickerington Central (15-3, 10-0) to seal a 57-38 victory against host Newark in OCC-Buckeye play.

Emma Quackenbush hit a trio of 3s during a 15-point performance to lead the Wildcats (13-7, 10-2). Calli Geller added 13 points and Leah Eckenrode 10.
