Richland County athletes go out with a bang at New Balance National Outdoor Championships

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Richland County athletes excelled on the biggest of stages last week.

The New Balance National Outdoor Championships were held at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania from June 19-22.

For Lexington, Latrell Hughes earned All-American honors in the 800-meter run by finishing fifth in the entire nation with a time of 1:48.46. During his junior state track meet, Hughes won the state title in the event as well as in the 4×800-meter relay.

Chance Basilone finished 11th in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, an event not recognized in Ohio, but he competed well on the national stage and could potentially run it at The Ohio State University next spring.

The 4×400 relay team of Will Perkins, Dantrell Hughes, Latrell Hughes and Bryston Hess followed up their runner-up performance at state with an 11th-place finish at nationals with a 3:14.71. The 4×800 relay team was disqualified.

Perkins was 44th in the 400-meter dash with a 48.13.

For Ontario, junior Jace Young competed in the 800-meter run and ran the 85th-best time out of 191 runners with a 1:54.39.

The girls 4×400 state champion relay team of Arialyn Bischak, Tessa Crum, Sasha Bulakovski and Audrey Mahon finished 20th in the nation with a time of 3:56.98, while the same quartet was 51st in the 4×200 with a time of 1:43.78, an event it finished runner-up in at the state meet.

The boys 4×800 team of Dean Morrison, Xander Chitwood, Xavier Trent and Jace Young rant an 8:03.43 to take 50th in the nation.

Maddix Smith competed in the freshman boys discus competition, where he finished 33rd with a throw of 129-03, while Manny Garza competed in the freshman high jump competition and took sixth with a leap of 6-01.25.

For Shelby, Madison Henkel followed her long jump state championship with a 17th-place finish in the event with a leap of 18-10.50. She also joined Princess Timko, Ashley Montgomery and Ava Bowman on the 4×200 team that took 50th with a 1:43.60.

For Clear Fork, Julian Mills followed his All-Ohio performance in the shot put up with a 46th-place finish in the nation when he recorded a 51-10.50 at nationals. Katie Beck competed in the middle school 400-meter dash and took 78th with a 1:02.36.

Mansfield Middle School’s Adayaleise Trumpower finished seventh in the nation in the middle school 1-mile run with a 5:02.75. She won a middle school state title during her seventh-grade year.
