PITTSBURGH – The Cincinnati Reds got out of Pittsburgh with a series win, but even in their series finale they couldn’t escape without taking two more injury scares to key players into this week’s big four-game series in Milwaukee.
The potentially more serious one involves $15 million slugger Eugenio Suárez, who as the DH on Sunday was hit on the left wrist by a pitch in the sixth inning and didn’t bat again in the game.
Manager Terry Francona said X-rays were inconclusive because of the degree of swelling, and Suárez is to have a CT scan on the wrist Monday morning in Milwaukee ahead of that night’s series opener against the Brewers.
“Right now it feels a lot better than when I got hit,” Suárez said after the game. “It was painful, but now I feel lot better, so I pray to God nothing comes up on the CT scan.
“With my experience, I feel that nothing’s in there,” he added. “It doesn’t feel like a bone. I hope it’s not a bone. I’ve those kind of hit by pitch(es) in the past a couple of times, and this one (seems) like he hit me in a strong spot. So I don’t feel like anything is broken, but obviously we’ll wait till (Monday).”
The other injury watch involves shortstop Elly De La Cruz who sprained his ankle when he slipped breaking out of the box on a grounder to second base in the fifth inning. He was checked by the trainer and stayed in the game but seemed to favor the ankle.
De La Cruz, who only returned from a three-week hamstring injury during the previous series, got the ankle treated and taped tightly during the game’s 1-hour, 5-minute rain delay in the eighth inning, Francona said.
“It kind of stiffened up while we were in here,” Francona said. “We’ll re-evaluate him, too, (Monday) and see how he’s doing.”
De La Cruz played the whole game and drew a two-out walk in the ninth.
The Reds lost 9-4. They have won three of their past four series as they head to Milwaukee.
